Currently Watching: An Update

TV

This year in March I ran through all of the TV shows I was currently watching. That wasn’t all that long ago, but already that list needs an update thanks to a slew of new cable shows and a couple of network shows I’ve started watching.

As there are quite a lot, please read on below to see the entire list:

    • Better off Ted
    • Better off Ted
    • I’m very late to this show, and I think I’ve nearly seen all of the episodes, thanks to FX. It’s so very funny! Alongside Community and Psych, this is another show which actually makes me laugh out loud. Not just smile from a joke or two. Think the only character I don’t care for is Linda. I understand why she’s there, but it’s all about Lem, Phil, Ted and Veronica. Oh and Ted’s daughter – she’s so cute! Lem and Phil’s antics probably make me laugh the most. Oh and Veronica’s bluntness. Pretty much everything. Love it!

    • One of the few new network shows I’m watching. I was just curious to see what Tom Selleck was like back on TV. Answer? He’s pretty good! Along with the rest of the cast of Blue Bloods, family cop drama type show. It could fall into the procedural category, but there’s plenty of family stuff going on to stop that from happening. I’m hoping. Also the conspiracy storyline’s a good long plot line to keep me interested.

    • Brand new show that I’ve started watching and I’m sucked in already. It’s a beautiful show to watch, love how they’ve created the look of the 1920s era. Steve Buscemi’s character’s not exactly the nicest guy, but I’m warming to him. It’s very early days, but this is one of the few new shows I’ll definitely be sticking with.

    • I am so late on this bandwagon but I’m firmly on it now! This is a damn good show. Maybe a little depressing, but I think that’s what I like about it. I’ve found myself laughing at things I really shouldn’t be laughing at too. I’m very behind, and with the new season of shows starting, it’s only going to get worse. I’m at the beginning of season 2, but I’ve got until next July to catch-up!

    • This season has not set me on fire. I don’t like the inclusion of Jesse. I have honestly no idea what’s going on this season. It’s all just got so much more convoluted. Someone please explain what’s going on! That said I’m still watching. Sharon Gless and Bruce Campbell have kept me watching. The bottle episodes have been good. Just wish the big plot line made a bit more sense. It feels like it’s getting more convoluted for no reason.

    • I’ve started watching this again with season 2 on alibi. I enjoyed the first season but I couldn’t fit it into my TV schedule last year. This year’s no better but for some reason I feel like I can fit it in if it’s on the TV. A couple of episodes into the second season and it’s fun TV to watch, though I fear I might drop it again because of the same reason as last year!

    • Chuck
    • Chuck
    • Still watching Chuck. It’s only a couple of episodes into this season, but compared to what level of fan I was when I previously wrote about what I was watching, I feel like much less of a fan! I still enjoy it but it’s lost a bit of its spark for me. The slew of stunt casting slated for this season annoys me. Linda Hamilton aside, it just feels like they’re doing the stunt casting to give themselves a boost. Which they may need to do, but it still feels cheap to me. The plot lines just pass me by, but Ellie, Awesome and Chuck keep me watching.

    • My favourite sitcom hands down. Not that I watch many. There’s nothing about this show I dislike. It gives me laughs all around. The characters are brilliantly funny and Joel McHale is really quite hot. What’s not to like? Just hoping it gets another season. It deserves to, it’s one of the cleverest funny shows on TV at the moment.

    • Covert Affairs
    • Covert Affairs
    • Covert Affairs started off quite promising. It’s entertaining and Piper Perabo’s well cast in her role, but there were a handful of episodes where I drifted off. Christopher Gorham’s the one person who keeps me watching. Auggie’s pretty damn awesome, and often has the best lines. I don’t really like Sendhil’s character at all. Seems a bit pointless, and he has no chemistry with Piper. The season ended well, but wondering where they’ll take the next season.

    • Dexter
    • Dexter
    • Dexter’s back! I have missed this show so goddamn much! Definitely my favourite show, alongside Mad Men. The first episode of this season had me in tears pretty much throughout. It feels like it is going to be an emotional season. Poor single father Dexter! Oh and if you’d have asked me back when I was watching season 1, do I like Deb. The answer would have been a definitive no, but she is my favourite character, after Dexter. They’ve done some amazing things with her character – she’s come a long way!

    • Eureka
    • I was really scared about another season of Eureka. Last season was good, but it felt like it lost a bit of its spark. Spark is well and truly back! I am loving what they’ve done with this season so far. Alternate time lines can be a little tedious but they’ve pulled it off with Eureka. Love all the changes and how the changes are slowly trickling back to what they were. And there’s a bit of an arc. Bonus!

    • Having only seen the first episode of the new season I can’t really say too much about what I think about the new season. I do think I’m going to enjoy what’s to come. I love how they’re handling the alternate universe stuff. Just hope Olivia remembers who she really is! Also AlternateOlivia? Hands off Peter! He’s not yours. More Walter please in the next episodes.

    • Glee
    • Glee
    • When Glee came back after it’s mid-season hiatus last year I just didn’t enjoy it as much. It was still one of my favourite shows, but it was just lacking that something that the beginning half of the season hand. I’m seriously worried about season 2 of this show. I haven’t really liked the couple of episodes I’ve seen so far, save for some awesome quips from Sue. I’m hoping things improve. I want it to be like the old Glee, but feels as though they’ve sold out with just song after song in every episode. Where’s the plot?

    • The Good Guys
    • The Good Guys
    • Funny cop show with Colin Hanks and Bradley Whitford. Job done! The plots for each episode are ridiculous but they pull it off. There’s a very nice car to look at, Colin Hanks is adorable. I’m partly hoping this gets picked up for another season, because it’s so much fun to watch. But the other part of me doesn’t mind if it gets axed because I watch too much TV as it is!

    • Grey's Anatomy
    • Grey’s Anatomy
    • Yes, I’m still watching. It’s good. Loved last season’s finale and I like what I’ve seen so far of this season. I remember when there used to be so many hospital/medical dramas. Now I think I can count them all on one hand. I’m not liking what they’ve turned Cristina into – though I was never a big fan of hers. Liking April a lot more, as well as Derek.

    • Hawaii Five-O
    • Hawaii Five-O
    • I know I’m probably not old enough to have seen the original series, but I did! I remember watching it in on Saturday afternoons with the family. I can’t remember much, just some of the characters, catchphrases and little bits of the episodes. I wasn’t sure of the reboot. It was such a show of its time. However, I’m really enjoying the show! It’s a lot of fun to watch. Good, mindless entertainment. I’m hoping they give Daniel Dae Kim and Grace Park more to do – they’re better than just playing supporting characters. I might be developing a small crush on Alex O’Loughlin.

    • House
    • I’ve always been on the borderline with House. It’s entertaining enough, though I’m losing the will to watch it. It’s getting very samey, predictable and just bland. I’m even finding House, as a character, pretty boring too. Hugh Laurie’s great but how much further can they take House? I did like the first episode of the new season. So I’ll stick it out.

    • How I Met Your Mother
    • What happened to you!? I still watch and sometimes enjoy. But it just feels like all of the characters have turned into caricatures of themselves. None more so than Barney. I’m hoping this season improves on last season. However so far, it’s just been very average for me. A musical number from Marshall may make me change my mind!

    • Still watching! I don’t watch many UK TV shows but I’m quite proud to say I watch this one. It’s not all that ground breaking, but it’s a good bit of crime drama. It’s still going strong. Though some days I wish they’d spend more time with the police than the CPS. Though spending more time with the CPS side of things has made me like Freema a bit more.

    • I’m watching at Bravo pace, so I’m very behind. Really enjoyed the first season but it feels like every episode in the second season starts and ends in exactly the same way. I’m getting a bit bored with it. There’s no season arc, as far as I can remember, and I really need that! The cast and characters are really good and I have fun watching most of the episodes. It’s just I’m beginning to wonder if it’s worth me sticking through more Leverage just waiting for something big to happen.

    • The second season only just finished and yet the third season’s due to start in a few weeks on Sky. I really like this show. Brendan Hines aside, Tim Roth is really quite good as Lightman. I quite like the bottle episode, and for some reason I’m never too fussed that this show doesn’t have a season long arc. Except whatever’s going on with the characters at the institute. Bring on season 3.

    • Mad Men
    • Mad Men
    • Is it me, or has this season had a whole lot more funniest in it? I feel like there’s something in it that makes me laugh out loud at least once in every episode. A lot of them have been Peggy making me laugh – peering over the wall at Don, banging her head on her desk and riding the scooter in circles. I love where they’re going this season. Everything feels very fresh and new. Like I said above, alongside Dexter, Mad Men is my favourite show. It never fails to entertain.

    • Next to Community this is the other show that gives me proper LOL moments. Just seen the first two episodes of the new season and there were countless LOL moments. Mitchell stuck in the princess castle with the bird was hilarious. As was Phil jumping on the car! I love this show

    • Psych
    • Love, love, LOVE IT! There’s nothing wrong with this show, everything’s right with it. More shows should be like this. Actually they shouldn’t. Psych should be the only thing as brilliant as this on telly. It’s funny, though there’s been some nice drama-y moments. Okay, I’m backtracking here. If I could change one thing, I’d maybe add a tad more drama. There’s been plenty of funnies, but I think my favourite moment from the first half of this season was the Shawn/Juliet momet in the last episode before the hiatus. Awww!

    • I had very fickle reasons for starting to watch this show – James Badge Dale. First seen in 24, then I saw him in The Departed, followed by The Pacific. He really is lovely to watch. The pilot of the show had me confused. But the confusion just made me want to watch more. As the episodes rolled on there was more confusion but they were really building on the characters. Think Miles is my most liked character. I love how all over the place he can get. Kale Ingram’s pretty awesome too. Reminds me a lot of Ben Linus from Lost. It’s taken a while for the pace to pick up, but now that it has it’s one of my favourite shows!

    • I think SGU’s still BSG-lite but it’s pretty good at being that. BSG definitely did siege on the ship a whole lot better than SGU could even try. But they’ve got some strong characters now and I’m hoping things get a bit more depressing for them on the Destiny and we the characters fall apart more. They’re floating in space! Things shouldn’t be all candyfloss and WOO!

    • Supernatural
    • I’m a bit scared of this new season. I would quite happily have seen Supernatural end last season with the apocalypse. It was a good way to end a show, with an amazingly strong season. This season’s started off with a bit of a whimper. I’m intrigued as to what could have brought Sam and Grandpa Winchester back, but things feel very different. Just glad the Impala’s back!

    • Fickle reasons for starting to watch this show – Michael Raymond-James. Before he went all creeper-y in True Blood, he was very cute! I’m glad there was a reason to start me watching this show as it’s pretty damn awesome. Donal Logue and Michael Raymond-James have awesome onscreen chemistry. Laura Allen is so much more likeable than she was in The 4400. There’s quite a few moments which remind me of Breaking Bad. In that I laugh and the moment is meant to make me laugh, but I’m also not meant to laugh because of what’s going on. And there’s a nice long plot-line to keep me tuning in.

    • True Blood
    • True Blood
    • True Blood was just weird last season. I did like seeing Bill having more to do than just whimper after Sookie and yell out ‘SOOKIE!’ all the time. The addition of Alcide was very welcome. I’m very happy to know that he will definitely be back. Things felt a little lost this season. The side arc with Sam felt a bit pointless. Russel was amusing, but he was at his best when he punched the news guy on TV. I’ll still be watching next season as it’s still far better than a lot of things on TV these days.

    • White Collar
    • Enjoying this show. I really love Peter and Neal together, like Terriers, think these two guys have great onscreen chemistry. I’m not so sure about the arc of this season with the music box and whatever’s going on with that. I wish they had followed through with last season’s mid-season jaw dropping moment and made Peter part of what was going on. I was annoyed when they dropped Natalie Morales, brought back Marsha Thomason in basically the same role and just gave her more to do. Irks aside, I don’t think I’d consider ever dropping White Collar. Like Five-O, it’s a fun and entertaining show to watch. I hope they follow through with this year’s mid-season finale, no matter how sad that will make me!

Small mention goes to Lone Star which I did see. Well the first two episodes, which have so far aired. Really enjoyed it. It would have been the kind of show I stuck with. Just have to hope that they air the rest of the episodes filmed at some point in time.

I did try the pilot of The Event but nothing about it really grabbed me. Why on Earth is everyone trying to be the new Lost, just do something original! I might try it again when it starts on Channel 4, but I highly doubt my current schedule will allow for anything new.

I stuck it out with Nikita for, what could have been, longer than I really should have given it. I never saw the original film or TV show. The only reason I started watching because it looked like nice, light entertainment. It almost is. The pilot was good. Reminded me a lot of Dark Angel, which I loved. However since the pilot the episodes have gradually gone downhill. Xander Berkley is completed wasted in his role, Aaron Stanford’s the only character I like, Maggie Q’s pretty but bland and Shane West could deserve to do a bit more. Now, after five episodes I’ve decided to ditch this show. If I was watching less TV I might have tried to stick it out. The last few episodes were poor and boring. No point keeping this fat.

Returning shows that haven’t yet started at the time of writing that I will continue watching are – Bones, Caprica, Damages, Justified, Primeval and Sanctuary. New shows that haven’t started yet on UK TV that I think I want to watch are – The Walking Dead and Raising Hope. Once everything else gets going I reckon I’ll need to update this list again!

  1. Seeing them all listed out like this is a little scary.

Why does only Dexter get an A+ if it’s joint favourite with Mad Men?

    • Probably because it took me so long to write the damn thing I forgot what scale I was going up and down to.

  2. I feel the same about True Blood. Best part of the season for me was Tara’s crazy vampire stalker. He was a riot, freaking LOVED that guy’s performance. And then they killed him! Damn writers.

    Loving the blog, btw šŸ˜€

    • Jina! It’s been such a long time. Hope you’re doing well šŸ™‚

Ahh, I was hoping he’d kill Tara. Now that would have been my highlight of the season. Franklin was awesomely insane.

  3. This is a great list! You’ve pretty much covered all the bases for great tv shows. The only ones I don’t watch are HIMYM, Better Off Ted (although I understand it was highly underrated), Glee (No. Just… no.) and White Collar. I’m curious, will you be watching The Walking Dead when it premieres in the UK on Nov. 5?

    • I don’t know if I’ll be able to wait those few days to watch The Walking Dead! I think I’ll cave and watch as soon as it’s aired in the States.

I’m seriously on the borderline with Glee, more than ever now. Also sadly, I’ve had to cut Castle and Leverage off my list. Partly because of time and partly because … i didn’t care that i wasn’t caught up. That’s a sign.
