There’s a brand new crop of TV shows that are starting this year and, as usual, I’m diving into a lot of them. Thankfully I’m diving right back out of a lot of them too.

  • The Cape
  • Clichéd as hell. Boring. Nothing of much interest in the pilot for me. I only managed to watch the first episode that aired, didn’t make it to the second. I couldn’t bring myself to watch it because I got so bored during the first episode. It’s not even one of those shows that’s so bad it’s good. While it could get better, I’m trying to be more strict with my TV viewing. I think the only thing that I did like was the beautiful score music and theme tune by Bear McCreary. Someone give him a scoring job on a good TV show that I’ll watch!

  • No Ordinary Family
  • Watched the first episode and it did entertain. A little. Not a lot. It’s pretty inoffensive stuff. But I just couldn’t get into it. Whether it was the characters, the general theme of the show. I think I’d rather just watch The Incredibles over and over again. This show definitely didn’t jump out at me, and it’s what I’m looking for in my TV shows now. Maybe not a big jump, but something to spark some interest. Superheroes aren’t doing well on the small screen.

  • Off the Map
  • It is Grey’s Anatomy in the jungle. But a poor man’s version of Grey’s, and that’s saying something. The point of being doctors in the jungle and using the jungle was rammed down my throat that by the end of the first episode I felt thoroughly patronised. Poor Caroline Dhavernas. I wanted this to be good just to have her back on TV. Like The Cape, this could get better, but I think I’ve got my fill of medical dramas with Grey’s Anatomy.

  • Being Human (US)
  • I think I watched one and a half season of the UK Being Human. It was good. Well I liked the first season but really struggled with the second. I fell behind after a holiday and could never bring myself to watch about 5 episodes that I had stuck on my box to watch. I was pretty sceptical about there being a US version of the show. More so when I found out that SyFy were doing it. I’d expected one of the major cable networks to produce it. Nevertheless here we are. I think I liked the pilot. It kept me entertained. It did feel a bit dull at times. But I like the cast. I liked the plot of the first season of the UK version so I’m guessing I’ll like the plot of the US version’s first season. Though I do hope it moves a bit more away from the UK version or else I might get bored! Sticking with this one to see where it goes.

  • Episodes
  • Trying to figure out why I liked Episodes. It didn’t make me properly laugh, but I did find myself sniggering and smiling a little while I watched. I’m not a big fan of UK comedy, but like the actors in this show. Whatever it is, I’m sticking with this show with the promise of some good funnies in the future.

  • Lights Out
  • Another good solid drama from FX. The only actor I’ve heard of in the show is Stacy Keach, everyone else I’m oblivious to. Well not any more. Really enjoyed the pilot. Good characters and a story I can see getting more interesting as the season goes on. I am however worried that this is going to be another Terriers. While the critics have all loved the pilot, the ratings were abysmal. Worse than Terriers pilot ratings. Oh dear. I’ll keep watching!

  • Shameless (US)
  • The UK version of Shameless never appealed. Then again, neither do a lot of UK shows. The casting of William H. Macy drew me to this initially, though after seeing the pilot it’s Emmy Rosum that’s won out on the show. She was brilliant as Fiona. Also surprised by Justin Chatwin who I was just plain sick and tired of when watching War of the Worlds. He’s grown up. Love all the actors playing the various Gallagher kids. Looking forward to seeing more of this show.

It’s funny, out of the new crop of shows I’m sticking with, half of them are remakes of UK shows. Ah well.

There’s more new shows starting in the next couple of months, which I think I’ll be tuning in to. I’ll update the list when they kick off!
