A few days ago I tweeted about Snapjoy – a new start-up who want you to use them for online photo storage. Today I finally took the plunge and decided to give it a proper try to have uploaded a few hundred photos of mine to see how it handles them.

I know a lot of places are comparing Snapjoy to flickr or Picasa. Well, they’re all online photo storage places of sorts.

Though unlike flickr or Picasa, Snapjoy isn’t claiming to be anything else other than online photo storage and sort-age. You upload your photos, Snapjoy cleverly sorts all of your photos and displays them chronologically using the meta data that’s attached to the photos. You don’t have to do anything.

If you like to sort your photos yourself and put them in albums according to events or something else, this may no be for you. But for me, right now, I’m looking for somewhere where I can back-up my photos. Be able to download them easily if I ever need to. Be able to view my photos easily by date without me having to faff with them. Snapjoy does all of that.

The great thing is that you control who sees your photos. All photos are private when they go up and then it’s up to you which individual ones you share, or groups.

I am loving the Remember When feature. It’s basically the ability to view a random photo from your library, but a cute name gives it a warm and fuzzy feeling that I like.

If Snapjoy takes off and I do use it for my photos, I think I’d probably keep my flickr account. But, probably delete a lot of the photos on there that are there just for safe keeping. Only put the photos up I genuinely want to share.

Snapjoy is still in beta. So it could all go boom. I’m hoping it doesn’t. My 600 odd photos I’ve uploaded to my Snapjoy library have all been sorted by year, month, week, day and time of day without me having to add tags sort them myself. Big thumbs up from me, and I hope it does well so I can continue using it.
