The 120+ movie challenge conclusion

120+ Movies of 2011, Annual Movie Challenge

It’s the end of 2011 and sadly I failed both the projects I set out to do when I started the year.

My 365 project ended in February. Big failure. My 120+ films of 2011 (Whereby I watch at least 120 films in a year. New films to me, not necessarily new releases.) was also a little bit of a failure as I didn’t reach my target. Though, last year I somehow managed to go over 120, despite my target only being 100.

It wasn’t a total failure. Still managed (just) over 100 films, which is a bit of a feat in itself. Saw some quality stuff and not so quality stuff. So here’s a run down of my year in films.

I saw 42 films at the cinema. That’s definitely the most I’ve ever seen in the cinema during one year. Dread to think of how much money I’ve spent!

I’ve given 13 films 5/5. They are…

  • 127 Hours
  • The King’s Speech
  • Thor
  • Fast & Furious 5: Rio Heist
  • Up in the Air
  • The Usual Suspects
  • Senna
  • Super 8
  • The Secret in their Eyes
  • TrollHunter
  • Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy
  • The Ides of March
  • 50/50

And I also gave 11 films 1/5. They are…

  • He’s Just Not That Into You
  • Imagine That
  • Red
  • Monsters vs. Aliens
  • Lakeview Terrace
  • The Happening
  • Carriers
  • Walking Tall
  • The Human Centipede
  • Legion
  • Apollo 18
  • Skyline

I watched…

  • 2 films from the 80s.
  • 3 documentaries. Senna being the clear favourite out of those.
  • 4 westerns. Rango being my favourite.
  • 5 foreign films. The Secret in their Eyes hitting me hardest. TrollHunter making me laugh loudest.
  • 6 animated films. How to Train Your Dragon surprising me most.
  • 8 comic book movie adaptations. Thor being my favourite.
  • 11 sequels. Fast & Furious 5 probably being the most satisfying.
  • 14 films in April. My busiest film month.
  • 19 horror films. Though none really stand out for me.

I’m going to do another film challenge next year. I’ve been doing them every year since 2008, so it’ll feel strange not doing one. Wondering how many I should attempt to fit into next year. Maybe just aim for 100+?

  1. Ahah I say: Never, NEVER, count the money you spend on movies at the end of year! Above all, if you know that most of those movies were not worth it.
Anyway, congrats! 100 is a great number nevertheless. I’m so proud of you.

Happy New Year, may it bring you tons of new good movies and TV Series πŸ™‚

    • The movies were totally worth it. Most of the time I tend to enjoy a film more if I go see it on the big screen. Well, except when I get stuck sitting next to someone who insists on eating popcorn with their mouth wide open!

Happy New Year to You too!

  2. At least you got quite far. I have the same thing with my own IMDB top 250 challenge. My goal was to have watched at least 200 by the end of the year (I was already quite far when the year started), but fell short by 1 (also because of the ever changing list).

Set yourself the goal of a 100, you can always change it πŸ™‚

Those are some nice movies you gave a 5/5, still have not seen Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. Think it came out this week over here, but have not been able to go out and watch it.

I’ve just put up my own 2011 overview if you are interested:

    • I don’t think I could do 250 films or an ever changing list! Though I guess the top, say 100, don’t change that much.

I set myself 100 last year and managed over 120. Bizarre! But yep, I think 100 for next year sounds like a better target.

I’ll take a look at your overview, cheers!

  3. There’s some there I havent seen. %#$&@#&$ TTSS still has OPENED near me…

The Usal Suspects is an all time classic, and “The Happening” is the exact opposite. LOL

    Ever seen this Jaina? LOL

    • That is HILARIOUS! Marky Mark is back! Just illustrates how deluded M. Night can get. Or still is. Almost makes it worth watching The Happening.

I can’t believe it took my til this year to watch The Usual Suspects and that I remained pretty spoiler free about it. Except for knowing the name Keyser Soze.

      • WOW! You didnt have his identity spoiled? You ARE lucky!!

And yeah, those clips of M Night at the end just make him look completely insane… LOL

  4. The fact that you did over 100 movies is, to me, chuffin’ brilliant πŸ˜€ Not counting this year, the two years prior I tried the 100 Movies challenge and failed miserably. May try in 2012 though. And thanks to you, I can put ‘He’s Just Not That Into You’ on my list of movies to absolutely avoid at all costs.
