A feast for crows? More like a cheap Chinese buffet

A Feast for CrowsFinally. I’ve finished reading A Feast for Crows. That was a bit of a long and, sometimes, painful slog. I just kept reading and read, but nothing was happening.

I swear there was a section of the book with about three chapters, back-to-back, all being very long and being about meetings. Meetings about meetings. Meetings where things were discussed. But NOTHING came out of them. NOTHING. It felt like they were in there just to pad the book out a little bit.

Talking about padding, George, I really don’t care how many jerkins a man is wearing or what colour gown some lady is wearing. I don’t even know what a bloody jerkin is! The same goes for food. Yes, I get it. These people are feasting. Just get to the damn point.

As you might have been able to tell, I was getting frustrated. I stopped reading at night. I was just a little put off. But I knew I had to get the book finished.

Then finally! In the last couple of chapters, things started happening! Big things. Proper things. Plot moving things! Colour me all sorts of excited.

It was strange for the last ‘chapter’ of the book to be some sort of apology from George R.R. Martin. Well I read it as an apology. I wonder at what point he felt the need to explain why he wrote what he wrote.

Still. In those last couple of chapters he reminded just how good the series can be.

I want to go straight on to A Dance with Dragons, though I’m wondering. Should I take a small break from Westeros, The Wall, King’s Landing and the Lions? It’s not as ifA Dance with Dragons is going anywhere any time soon. Also, the quicker I finish that, the longer the amount of time will be until the next book’s out.

Chances are, by the time you read this, I’ll have already started A Dance with Dragons.

Oh and of course, it is highly, hugely likely that there will be spoilers for the TV show and books in the comments – so please be careful. Don’t say I didn’t warn you. Because I did. Right here.

  1. Good on you for finishing the book Jaina. Sounds like a bore for the most part so I probably would have given up after a few chapters lol

    • In amongst the bore there was sometimes something amazing, which kept me going. I still love the characters, which has kept me going through it. Just wondering how the TV show will handle all of this. Hopefully, better!

  2. AMEN! Totally agree on every point. Everything that really happened, could have been told in 200 pages. The last 200 pages, which remind you why you love the series, as you said.

I’m glad we’re on the same page! Can’t wait to know what you think about the next one 🙂

    • See, I get that you need to sometimes add a bit of padding. Some more story. But oh my word! I got bored, lost, confused. So many new characters all thrown at me. I was wondering if I even needed to know all of them. What was the point in the Onion Knight?!

Those last couple of hundred pages were good. Very good. But I missed Jon. The Wall. And more Jon. Looking forward to reading his stuff more than anyone elses!
