100 movies: Bad Teacher

100 movies of 2012

Every year I set myself a target, usually of about 100, of films to watch. These are new films. Not new, new films. But films that are new to me. Any time I’ve seen a new one, I post a bit of a brain dump of my thoughts on the film here. Enjoy!

Bad TeacherBad Teacher (29/04/12)

A comedy centered around a foul-mouthed, junior high teacher who, after being dumped by her sugar daddy, begins to woo a colleague – a move that pits her against a well-loved teacher.

This is not a good film. I could end it there. But I think it’s only fair I elaborate a little bit. Even though it feels like a struggle to even think about elaborating.

Cameron Diaz = bad teacher gone good just because she wants some money for some fake boobs and the only way she can do that is to cheat her way into getting a bonus. Oh and she wants the fake boobs to impress a dim witted fellow teacher played by Justin Timberlake.

I will admit, that I did laugh on occasion. Not the big ol’ laugh out louds, but a few sniggers. Childish amusement! I just hated Cameron Diaz’s character. She was just a straight up bitch. And, not that the film’s got a moral, but it pretty much says that being bad does pay off. In some sort of way.

The only bright spark was Jason Segel’s Russell Gettis. He’s funny. But not in that far too painful way. Funny little character. Just wish there was more of him, less Cameron and less Justin.
Rating: 1/5

  1. I liked the movie, especially Segel and Diaz’s performance but Timberlake was so annoying, I really wish he stayed away from movies.

    • See, I could manage JT in The Social Network and he was ok in In Time – just lacked the actual acting skill there!

  2. Oooh I think I might be a able to give it 2/5 probably. Very disappointing though as I thought the trailer made it look like it had great potential.

  3. Yeah, I didn’t like this one much either. I couldn’t stand Diaz’s character, and Lucy Punch damn near drove me insane.

    • Diaz just drove me insane. Not quite as much as Lucy Punch – jebus christ she was painful!

  4. I 100% agree with you. I saw this in the movie theater and didn’t like it one bit. I did laugh at a couple of things and Jason Segel was the only character that matter. All I could think about was, Man, I want to know more about Segel’s character. LOL

  5. Ah, another negative review for this awful film that doesn’t deserve to get any sort of love.

It’s getting to the point that whenever I see Cameron Diaz associated to a film I immediately have my doubts about whether it’s worth my time.
Jason Segel is also a hit-or-miss. He had a run of raunchy amoral rom-coms before The Muppets that were simply awful, like the aforementioned or Forgetting Sarah Marshall.

    Thanks for sharing!

    • I enjoyed Forgetting Sarah Marshall. More than I thought, because I have a massive dislike of Russel Brand and Kristen Bell.

Cameron Diaz – never been a fan. I honestly don’t see what’s so fantastic about her.

  6. Haven’t seen it and I have to say it’s mostly because of Cameron Diaz. I never understood why or how she became the big Hollywood star she’s become. She’s never done a single movie of any consequence and never showed any hint of acting outside of being…well, Cameron Diaz.

    • My thoughts exactly. I remember she broke out when she starred in The Mask alongside Jim Carrey and the world was suddenly in love with her. I just don’t get it.

  7. Should have been a whole lot meaner, dirtier, and funnier, but it was just mildly amusing with a stand-out performance from Segel, who makes everything so much funnier than it had any right to be. Nice review Jaina.
