The post with which I offend a bunch of parents

You know I said you’d probably be hearing more from me on my blog after I left my job? That didn’t really work out. I’ve been busy! However not busy with what I thought I would be.

Cody

See it’s been my first week of looking after my little Cody on my own. And I have a feeling I’m going to offend a few parents out there with what I’m going to write! Thing is, I’m about to compare looking after Cody to having kids. Hear me out.

  • I’ve been getting up earlier than I did when I went to work while looking after Cody because she’s up. Kids do that, right?
  • I have to spend my time tiring her out so she has her nap in the morning and afternoon.
  • She likes to bother me while I’m on the laptop in the study while actually working.
  • Cody likes to remind me that I need to remember to feed her. Not that I’ve forgotten, but she still feels the need to remind me.
  • No matter how much I clean up after her, the place turns into a mess five minutes later.
  • In the evenings, after having some food, Cody’s so tired she’s a bit over active and I need to tell her to go to her bed to go to sleep. I’m fairly certain I did that as a kid.

Parents out there, tell me there are some similarities here. Oh and sorry if I have offended!

  1. I don’t have kids so I’m not offended 😀 Besides, lots of people treat their pets like kids so I’m sure you’re not the only one, Jaina.

    • I’m just waiting for someone to say, “Oh but kids are….” or “You know nothing about children!” Hehe.

  2. With a title like that I thought you were going to write something much more offensive. So as a non-parent I’ll add some fuel to the fire:

Hey parents: We don’t want to hear about how much work your kids are. You got yourself into this mess with your 18 seconds of fun, and 18 years is your punishment!

Owning a dog, on the other hand, is a lot of work, and you don’t even get to deduct them on your taxes! Hahaha!

    • Man… how brilliant would it be to get tax deductions on a dog. That crazy dog lady down the road with 50 dogs would be a millionaire!

One day I’d like to have kids and one day future me will look back at this and probably think the worst of past me. Til then… I stand by this and everything you’ve said!

  3. Don’t forget that hopefully just like with kids, it’s all worth it in the end for the joy of having them in your life… well hopefully!

  4. As a parent, I’m not offended at all. Just good to see that looking after Cody makes you think about what parenting can potentially be like. It’s the hardest thing I’ve had to do. And, like most things, it’s not until you have to do it that you realise just how tremendously hard it is. At times you wish you could just walk away from it but you can’t. Still, parenting is something I definitely wouldn’t miss out on, if I had to choose again. Very demanding, relentless, frustrating, but hugely hugely rewarding. Highly recommended 🙂

    • I definitely have a bit more of an appreciation of what parents go through with kids.

I am currently sitting in my study daring not to move the wheels on my chair dare I wake the dog up. I want her to keep sleeping until my brother gets here, then she can have a play with him! I’m tapped out!

  5. HAHA. You crack me up, Jaina. Honestly, I don’t have a kid, but I have two dogs. Let’s just say, I 100% agree with you. Right now, my house looks horrible, there is a lot of cotton stuffing all round the house. Why, you asked, well…sadly a stuffed lamb toy lost his/her insides. LOL

Oh a side note, Cody is a sweetie pie. Just look at that face…he/she can’t do no wrong in my eyes. LOL

    • Poor little lamb! HA! Though, around any dog, I don’t think it would have had a chance 😉

Cody just sheds. Right now she’s shedding her winter coat and it’s just everywhere. I could brush her and brush her and it wouldn’t make a sodding bit of difference!

See, that’s her sweetie pie face. She uses it like a weapon!

  6. Great post! I don’t think anyone should get offended – it is very similiar I imagine. I have 4month old puppy and he cries whenever he is left alone, he constantly wants to play and he is curious about everything around him. Plus it’s such a responsibility to care for another living creature.

    • It is – I mean, I really would have loved a lie in this morning, but my little (big) one was needing her morning walk. Can’t think about myself too much!

  7. I was all set to be offended lol

Pets are good practice for having kids. If you don’t end up killing your pets you are probably ready for a kid.

    Cat<Dog<Kid

Above is my complex chart of parent responsibility levels

    • Ha! I approve of the chart. I might put a cat behind a tortoise or a hamster though 😉

  8. How dare you compare a dog to a child! 😉

Well, as a parent I can say some things do seem similar, although I never have the feeling I need to tire my daughter (almost a year now) out. I can see when she’s tired and just put her in the bed (when she gets older that’s something I’m sure will change). I’m usually the first one to get up during the week, so that’s something that hasn’t changed.

She does become very active though when it’s bedtime, it’s probably a self defense mechanism against sleep. It’s funny to see.

    • I love that – self defence mechanism. What is it about bed time that makes kids so damn over active!?

      Glad I didn’t offend too much 😉

  9. Cody is beautiful by the way! If I didn’t have dogs, and then have a kid, I’d totally be offended. But having had both a puppy and a baby, there are defs similarities. I wrote a post once: http://www.expandng.com/2011/08/puppies-babies.html. Now that we have a 2nd puppy and an 21-mo old, my puppy annoys me more than the toddler. Good luck with Cody. At least he’s not a puppy and housetrained. I hate my puppy when he has accidents — right in front of us! Or on the ottoman. Seriously, on the ottoman??!?!

    • Oh no! Really? That silly pup! Cody’s very well house trained. She lets me know when she needs to go out and do her business! I don’t know where she learned that from, but it’s been working since she was a little pup. Though her way of telling me is to jump on me. She’s a 35kg German shepherd – those jumps are not gentle!
