I am done dancing with dragons

Let me just first say, this is not a review. Merely musings of my journey through this mahoosive book. Oh and I’ll keep the spoilers to a minimum. In fact, I don’t think there will be any. Though I can’t guarantee it. So be vaguely warned!

A Dance with Dragons

Where in Westeros do I begin with A Dance with Dragons? I can’t remember where it started. I have a vague memory of the core characters who were followed in this book. But in all honesty, it’s just the very ending and last couple of chapters that I can truly remember.

And that’s the main problem with the later books in the A Song of Ice and Fire series. George R. R. Martin spends so long with the details, he forgets about the plotting and pacing. Some chapters will feel so utterly slow and bogged down. Others will race by. Especially when shit goes down.

Plenty of that did happen here. But there are so many characters now floating around this universe that it’s hard to truly keep track of them and their intentions. Which side they’re on. How many sides are there now? I don’t know!

I can’t remember where the events at The Wall were left. I do know what’s happened in King’s Landing. (No spoilers, but FINALLY we have some consequences!) The events in Meereen were just taking the piss though. They went on and on and on. Then suddenly there was a bit of movement at the end and it felt totally rushed!

You know what though? However bored and frustrated reading this book got me, I don’t think I can ever not continue reading the series. Until its end. It’s the hope that it will get better and also the hope that I will finally be paid off with an absolutely epic ending that keeps me picking up the books.

Now, when’s the next book coming out?

  1. Might have to give these books a go once I finish with all the other books I’ve got waiting to be read!

    • Definitely recommend them. 1-3 are amazing. 4 and 5 have been a bit … eh. But, I’m hooked now. Can’t stop reading!

  2. Good for you that you finished this massive book! I’m epic fail as far as my reading goal is concerned, I can’t seem to finish Anna Karenina so I probably will just jump on my next one, The Great Gatsby. Hopefully it’s more discernible for my little brain!

    • I’m usually useless with reading but since getting my Kindle and getting into these books, I’ve read more in a year than I have done in years!

I’m thinking of trying a classic. Like Catcher in the Rye or some such. Things I feel like I should really read.

      • Yeah I got into reading since I got a Kindle for Christmas, but I really should use it more, ahah.

  3. I’m still on 4th book, but yeah they are damn long. I love how they are written, it’s very rich and detailed by the length is overwhelming at times. Still it’s definetly worth reading, considering all the wicked twists and great moments.

    • I think sometimes Martin gets bogged down in the detail. It can just get a bit much. There are some fantastic twists coming up for you. Hope you stick with it 😀

  4. I’m still trying to decide if I want to bother reading the books. I like the idea of learning more about Westeros, but I am also really enjoying the element of surprise in watching the TV show blind. Plus the books are so long, as you said…

    • A lot of people say that. I thought I’d be the same, but at the end of the first season I just couldn’t wait to find out what happened next. 1 year on and I’ve read all five of the books!

Maybe read the books after the seasons are done? So you could read books 1 and 2 now. They’re among the best!

    • It’s tough trying to fit reading in if you’re anything like me and just never read regularly.

Halfway through the first book/ You’ve got the best stuff waiting for you in book 3! That’s got to be encouragement enough 😉
