RIP Tony Scott

It’s not common for me to post RIP messages up here on my blog. But there was a noticeable pause as I watched BBC Breakfast this morning and heard about Tony Scott’s death.

Tony Scott

Tony Scott – one of our time’s best action film directors.

Now I won’t go into a spiel of him being a great man, etc. I don’t know who he was or what he was like. But I will say, that I was a big fan of the films he had under his belt. When it came to action films, Tony Scott was one of the leading directors out there.

I won’t reel off all of his films but I will make note of the ones I loved – Top Gun, Days of Thunder, Beverly Hills Cop II, Crimson Tide, Unstoppable, Man on Fire, The Taking of Pelham 1-2-3, Enemy of the State and The Last Boy Scout. Those are my top Tony Scott films. You can’t not say that those aren’t some of the best action films we’ve had in the last twenty years.

It’s feels sad to know that there won’t be another Tony Scott helmed action film. Heck, it feels sadder to know that there won’t be another Tony Scott/Denzel Washington film – one of his long time collaborators.

    • Same here. Have a vivid memory of sitting in front of the TV watching the wheelchair race between Rooker and Cruise in Days of Thunder. I have a major soft spot for that film.

  1. It’s sooo crazy! I’m still trying to process this too, what drove him to such madness? I quite like some of his earlier movies, I grew up watching Top Gun, it was huge when I was in high school!

  2. This is so sad. He really made some great films like The Hunger, Spy Game and Man on Fire, they had such impressive style and really stood out among other films in respective genres.

  3. What a sad story! I wonder what drove him to end his life this way. Although in general less well-regarded as his brother Ridley, he will definitely be missed.

  4. I actually don’t know much about his films. But I did watched Unstoppable. I have to check out True Romance at some time.

    • True Romance and The Hunger have been on my to-watch list for a while. Being an action film junkie, his films are always on my radar.

  5. Very tragic news. I honestly haven’t seen too many of his films, but I was shocked to hear this. The response from those in the film world has been amazing — it sounds like he was an incredibly nice guy, too.

    • I think the key Tony Scott films everyone should see are Top Gun, Days of Thunder, Crimson Tide, Man on Fire, Enemy of the State and True Romance. Have yet to see True Romance, but the rest are gold. Heck, I loved last year’s Unstoppable too.

  6. It’s been a long time since I’ve seen the word “spiel” used. Love the fact that you used it. (sorry, I know that’s totally unrelated to the subject of this post, but it stuck out to me).

    • It’s an underused word. But can be dangerously overused.

I like it when people take notice of the little things 🙂
