For the first time, this Brit celebrated Thanksgiving last week. Well, I’m not sure celebrate is accurate. Thanksgiving dinner was had. Followed by much merriment. It was more just about the food. Isn’t that what Thanksgiving is all about?
Since as long as I can remember, I’ve really enjoyed having people over and cooking for them. Back in England I tried to do it as much as possible with my friends there. I’m proud to say I had an annual barbecue tradition where totally obscene amounts of food was cooked and consumed. And now I’m lucky enough to have a guy who enjoys doing this as much as me.
Please let the days start to get cooler. Please? Just the other day it was about 36 degrees C outside, but the feels like temperature was in the 50s. With 84% humidity. At 1am. This. This is life in Bahrain in the summer.
By the looks of the photo highlights I’ve picked out for August 365 photos, it just looks like I spent the entire month eating. In my defence though, there’s not a lot of other things to do in Bahrain when it gets this hot. It’s either eating, going to the mall and drinking. Well, okay. Sorry. That’s not fair. But I think it’s fair to say those are probably the most popular things to do.
I enjoy cooking. Sometimes. I wouldn’t call myself one of the most accomplished cooks ever, but I do know my way around a spice cupboard well to put together some of what my mum taught me. I can put flavours together pretty well. I can cook a meal for a group of friends or family without stressing too much.
Will quite happily admit I am not on the same level as cooking as the OH. He is a GREAT cook. Breakfast, lunch, dinner. Vegetables, pulses, lentils, meats. Such a good cook.
So it’s a little bit daunting when I cook for him. On the rare occasions that I do. He just enjoys it so much and he’s so good at it, I let him have at it! (I’m not going to deprive myself of the food he makes.)
BUT there’s one thing that I make that is apparently the best thing I have ever made. And that makes me a little bit proud. This is something I’ve been making for years. Not one of my own recipes, but a mum-inspired one. (They’re the best, right?)

The next day we planned to get up early and head to Bruges, followed by Ghent. Ambitious? Yes!
Getting the train to Bruges and then to Ghent was incredibly simple. In Belgium they have these fantastic bulk buy tickets, which are eligible for multiple journeys. In our group of 7 we just needed a couple of them and we were sorted. Also, massive kudos to the guys working in the ticket office in Gare Centrale in Brussels. Not only do they speak pretty amazing English, but overheard the line next to me and the ticket officer was speaking fluent Spanish! Imagine that in London? Yeah, didn’t think so!
I do believe I took Europe for granted when I actually lived in the UK. Just the proximity of so many wonderful cities to go and visit. And the fact that it is somewhat cheaper getting to a European city from London than it is Bahrain.
A couple of weeks back we headed off to Belgium for a family holiday. Yes, Belgium. Specifically, Brussels. The aim of the holiday? Eat and drink and maybe do some sightseeing. I think we accomplished that mission.
