100 movies: Kung Fu Panda 2

100 movies of 2012

Every year I set myself a target, usually of about 100, of films to watch. These are new films. Not new, new films. But films that are new to me. Any time I’ve seen a new one, I post a bit of a brain dump of my thoughts on the film here. Enjoy!

Kung Fu Panda 2Kung Fu Panda 2 (14/05/12)

Po and his friends fight to stop a peacock villain from conquering China with a deadly new weapon, but the Dragon Warrior must come to terms with his past.

Jack Black is not my favourite actor. He’s far, far, FAR down the list. That’s the reason why I’ve been putting off watching this film. I did enjoy the first film. Wasn’t blown away mind. It was fun. Felt there are better animated flicks out there.

Feel pretty much the same way about the sequel. Enjoyed it, there were some very nice looking sequences. Overall the film looked so much better than the first. Beautiful. Loved the conventional style animated scenes. Reminded me of Samurai Jack. Those were probably my favourite bits of the film.

The story was strong. While it’s nothing new, I liked that there was some development of Po. Though there were a few of the same ol’ gags from the previous film. Jack Black was very toned down, thank God. Don’t need another hyper gurning performance from him.

I feel like I might get eaten alive for saying this – good enough animated film. I enjoyed it, but it’s not staying with me in the long run. Looks like it won’t be the last we’ll see of Po.

100 movies of 2012 starts with The Tourist

100 movies of 2012

2011’s movie challenge of watching at least 120 films (That I hadn’t seen before) in the year appeared to be a little over ambitious. So I’m settling for being a little bit more humble with my goal this year and setting my sights on 100 films to been seen this year.

I was hoping to start the year off with a GREAT film. That great film was planned on being The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. However, the bank holiday mood crept in on me and I found myself unable to move from the sofa. I could reach the TV remote and settled on something to fill the time. Sadly, what filled the time only did just that…

The TouristThe Tourist (02/01/12)

Revolves around Frank, an American tourist visiting Italy to mend a broken heart. Elise is an extraordinary woman who deliberately crosses his path.

Well this film was just all wrong. As I said above, it filled the time, but that’s about all. Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie had zero chemistry. Neither looked all that interested in doing their acting thing in the film. Moments that were probably meant to be slightly comedic were bland and none of the action sequences were particularly thrilling.

The less said about the film the better. It was just bad, boring and bland. Like the poster.

Salt (20/08/10)
I think this film was being marketed as the female Bourne. Erm, not quite. It’s not as slick or well crafted as the Bourne films, far from it. The action’s not as ‘real’ and it’s just not comparable. However, saying that, Salt’s still an incredibly entertaining action flick. Some nice action sequences and a few explosions. The ‘twist’ I could see coming from the beginning of the film, but it didn’t hurt the film that it was that predictable. Angelina Jolie’s an awesome action actress. I reckon she’s the best action movie actress out there at the moment. The pace of the movie’s very good, there wasn’t a single moment where I felt like I could start drifting off and wondering where the film was going. It skips along very well to the end which leaves you feeling pretty satisfied.

Piranha 3D (21/08/10)
I feel as though I need to defend my rating of this film. The fact that I rated it so highly! Piranha 3D never claimed it was going to be the most thoughtful horror movie this year. It blatantly claimed it was going to be cheap, trashy with loads of blood and gore. All those boxes were definitely ticked! It’s one of the most entertaining horror films I’ve seen. Loads more laughs than you’d expect. There were some brilliant and imaginative death sequences. Some made me ‘OH!’ and others made me laugh out loud. The cast are brilliant too – great to see Christopher Lloyd go a bit Doc Brown! Go see it. With a big group of friends! The only thing that did disappoint was the 3D-ness. I was expecting more. There was the odd occassion where something would jump out of the screen, but there wasn’t enough.

Adventureland (22/08/10)
A nice little dramedy. Jesse Eiseberg’s good, Kristen Stewart didn’t completely annoy me. Though her portrayal of either annoyance, anger or being upset by ruffling her hair did start to annoy me slightly. The music was brilliant. Bill Hader and Kristen Wiig made me laugh. A nice little story. Nothing more to really add other than that. A good little film.
