What I've been watching: Last five films

What I’ve been watching: Last five films #2

Film

Guess who’s upped her film count in a matter of days? This person. You know how you make time to clean the house or plan your weekend. Well, I’ve made time for some film watching and it reminded me that it’s something I need. I need my film time. So I carved out some time to watch some great films.

Film Review: Interstellar

Interstellar Film Review

The wait to finally see Interstellar was painful. Painful. Absolutely wracked as to whether I should risk seeing it in the cinema over here in Bahrain, or just wait until it’s “accessible” for me. There’s no such thing as an IMAX cinema here, so there was no chance of getting to see Interstellar in all its glory. And I figured, seeing most of the spectacle on the big screen would be worth the thought of potentially having the odd swear word or something cut here or there. So cinema it was. THANK FUCK I DID THAT.

100 movies: The Dark Knight Rises

100 movies of 2012

[yellow_box]Every year I set myself a target, usually of about 100, of films to watch. These are new films. Not new, new films. But films that are new to me. Any time I’ve seen a new one, I post a bit of a brain dump of my thoughts on the film here. Enjoy![/yellow_box]

WARNING: This is a spoiler warning! I was going to attempt writing up my thoughts on The Dark Knight Rises without plot points about the film. But that’s proved somewhat impossible. So, if you’ve not seen the film but will be at some point and don’t want to be spoiled, go look at some of my photos. Oh and also, in case you didn’t already guess. This one is going to be a long one. I can’t make myself succinct about this film!

The Dark Knight RisesThe Dark Knight Rises (20/07/12)

Eight years on, a new terrorist leader, Bane, overwhelms Gotham’s finest, and the Dark Knight resurfaces to protect a city that has branded him an enemy.

Before I begin with sorting out my thoughts on The Dark Knight Rises, let’s go back to the beginning with Batman Begins and The Dark Knight. See, in the run up to the release of The Dark Knight Rises I did what any sane person would do and did a rewatch of both. Sane or weirdly obsessive. I’ll let you decide. Anyway. Before this rewatch I was certain that The Dark Knight was the better film. It was beautifully dark. Serious. Unforgiving. It was everything a comic book film had never been.

As you might be able to guess. After the rewatch, I changed my mind. I’m not saying that The Dark Knight is a bad film or in any way a poor sequel to Batman Begins, but I just want to argue that it is actually a better all round film. Batman Begins sets up the universe. Gives us Gotham. Its heroes and villains. Sets the tone. It’s well structured. Has a fantastic score. It begins with a purpose and by the end, you’ve got it. The Dark Knight I found a little messy on my rewatch. I think the film is overshadowed by the epic performance given by Heath Ledger. It’s all anyway sees or talks about when it comes to that film. There is more to it than that, but it’s all anyone can really take note of. The Dark Knight also ends about 3 times before the actual ending.

So there you have it. Now you know where my mindset is in terms of the trilogy, let’s get into my thoughts on The Dark Knight Rises.

100 movies: Some goodies

100 movies of 2010

[REC] (09/07/10)
I had no expectations of this film other than I could potentially have a jump and it was in another language so I would be reading some subtitles. I sat and watched and got sucked in. Very good horror movie which actually did make me jump a couple of times. For me that’s rare. I liked the fact there they didn’t feel a need to explain things. Things happened and you just get caught up in the events and go along with it like the characters in the film did. Quite like to see the sequel now.

Inception (17/07/10)
Chris Nolan is awesome. He picks the best cast, creates the best films and makes my mind explode and implode. I loved Inception. My brain did hurt a little while watching and after watching. I’m not going to say too much so as not to give too much away but it was awesome. JGL needs to be in more films. Please. And have guns. Also Tom Hardy was a nice surprise, he was very good! And the score was brilliant. LOVED!
Rating: 5/5

Moon (18/07/10)
This was also nothing like i was expecting, though I had very few expectations. Just that I was meant to love this. And I did. Sam Rockwell was brilliant. He carried the film amazingly well.

100 movies: Children of Men, We Own the Night

100 movies of 2010

A couple more movies to add to the list.

Children of Men (13/02/10)
A movie that’s sat on my ‘to-watch’ list for a very, very long time. I’m a bit sad that I missed out on seeing this at the cinema – big screen and all. Very good movie and out of movies set in the future with a bleak take on it, this feels like one of the bleakest! Where fertility’s an issue and the population of the planet is just declining to an inevitable end. I like my sci-fi movies to not always look so glossy so I loved the look of this movie. Made the bleak future look all the worse. I was surprised by Clive Owen. In most of the movies he’s in he just looks so blank and that he’s just phoning it in. He was good. I don’t want to give away any major spoilers here, so I’ll just say – good movie, people should watch.

We Own the Night (14/02/10)
I haven’t watched any cheery movies this weekend, that’s for sure. This didn’t exactly have the happiest subject matter either. Joaquin Phoenix before he went all mad and beardy – he was really very good. As was the rest of the cast – Mark Wahlberg and Robert Duvall. On the surface of this movie it’s about drugs, police and crime, but underpinning it all is a movie about family and what family do for each other, no matter what’s happened in the past. Which is the one part of the movie which got me through the movie. In the beginning I wasn’t feeling it too much, but as it got more into the characters, I got sucked in. Very good movie.
