Laughs in the Park with Eddie Izzard, Dylan Moran and Reginald D. Hunter

Going Out

I’ve not see much live comedy. In fact, I think last year when I went to see Eddie Izzard at Wembley Stadium was my first ever time seeing live stand-up comedy. Shocking!

Eddie Izzard at Laughs in the Park 2010

Last Saturday I went to Laughs in the Park 2010, in St. Albans at Verulamium Park. An outdoor comedy event! Madness!

I was going for Eddie Izzard – he’s proven to make me laugh as seen last year Wembley Stadium and on the telly box. Also after seeing him run all of those marathons I do respect and admire him.

I only knew Dylan Moran from Shaun of the Dead and I had never seen the comedy stylings of Reginald D. Hunter. All I knew was that I would get some laughs from at least one person.

It was a ridiculously cold September evening, but I was armed with several layers of wooly clothing, a warm pair of boots and a blanket. I figured that would keep me warm enough for the evening.

Thanks to the awesome person who booked the tickets the seats were amazing! Third row! Which meant I didn’t have to watch a screen and could instead look at the comedian instead. Always a bonus.

Izzard came on first and did some comedy. Introduced Dylan Moran, who then did some comedy. Followed by more Izzard. Who then introduced Reginald D. Hunter. Followed by MORE Izzard. Then the evening ended with a brilliant fireworks display.

I wish I could remember specific jokes/stories Izzard told. I do remember that most of the material I had heard before, but it was either slightly more developed/shortened/changed in some way. I’m glad some of the ones which made me laugh were still there:

  • Child with sponges in mouth
  • The Shark
  • Dinosaurs didn’t rule the world
  • Egyptians
  • Noah’s Ark
  • Jesus – 10th son of God

There were more, but I can’t remember. Which is a little bit disappointing. I’ll remember when I hear it next. I can’t remember the plague of frogs bit – that made me laugh more than it should. I always laugh

Dylan Moran was funny! Most of his jokes were about being a middle-aged man, a father and growing old. All good stuff. He was funnier than I was expecting. Riffing off of real life makes for some good stand-up.

Reginald D. Hunter did make me laugh, but after a while I got a bit bored. I don’t mind racial jokes – I find them pretty funny, but I get bored with them pretty quickly. He seemed to struggle towards the end. Trying to understand some hecklers didn’t help. There were a few men vs. women style jokes too, which again are funny but, again, I get bored with them pretty quickly.

All in all, it was a very funny night. If there’s anything like this again next year I will be well up for going again.
