Buffy: The Slayer Rebooted

Warner Bros. have officially greenlit a reboot of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Yep, we’ll be seeing a new live-action incarnation of Buffy some time in the (near) future.

As a long time, die-hard Buffy fan, this hasn’t shocked me to my core as much as it has the rest of the Buffy fandom. This could be down to a few factors. The major one being that, in my eyes, Joss Whedon isn’t quite the ‘God’ he used to be in my eyes. Why? A couple of things.

Dollhouse. Joss’ most recent flop. I tried to watch the show but I just couldn’t get into it at all. The characters were flat. The leading actress couldn’t hold the show together and the concept wasn’t exactly something TV was crying out for. Dollhouse just failed for me.

The second thing – Buffy Season 8 Comics. I gave them a go. I read more than I think I should have. The characters weren’t who I remembered. They were shoe horning as many old villains and characters as possible, instead of creating some great new characters. All to placate long time fans. I guess it worked for some fans. Not this one.

Not all reboots are bad. Batman reboot has been the best thing to happen to that franchise. The new Spider-Man reboot looks to be a good thing too. I understand that the main problem will be the lack of involvement from Joss Whedon, but I’m intrigued to see what Buffy could look like with a fresh pair of eyes. Those of Whit Anderson. (Erm, who?)

So, I’m going into this reboot with an open mind. It could be good. It could be horrendous. Anything’s better than those season 8 comics.

  1. Hmm…well I’m intrgued but I’ll reserve judgement if it comes out. And you’re right, the season 8 comics are rubbish.

    • I am intrigued, and same as you, more than willing to judge it AFTER i see it.

The season 8 comics were just so bad. I was expecting Fray!

  2. I can see you point, though I’m more of the ‘Please, God, no’ persuasion, lol.

For me personally, the fact that BtVS was my first real foray into the world of fandom, attaches a great deal of sentimental value to the memories I have of the show. If there was ever going to be a film continuation, I’d have hoped it would’ve led off from that, Joss, SMG and co at the helm.

Agree on Dollhouse. Didn’t bother watching the second season. Tried. Failed.

    • I don’t think a Buffy movie with the original cast/Joss was ever going to happen, mostly because i don’t think any of the cast wanted to go back there. Which i can understand.

Apparently the idea for this movie is just taking the concept of a slayer, not having the original characters and etc in it. Which, again, i’m open to.
