Paranormal Activity 3Paranormal Activity 3 (21/10/11)

In 1988, young sisters Katie and Kristi befriend an invisible entity who resides in their home.

While I haven’t exactly loved the previous two Paranormal Activities, they did offer some good jumps and they’re always fun to watch in the cinema. I probably find it more amusing than I should to see/hear other cinema goers jumping and screaming in their seats.

I think I preferred this one to the previous ones. Sure it employs more or less the exact same tactics as before to get a scare. But felt like there was more of a plot and a point to this film. It had direction. Found the characters less annoying. Randy was a nice addition. He made me laugh.

The scares did start off small, but as things got worse in the house they were thrown at the audience thick and fast. There was a couple in front of me who began screaming at almost everything that popped up on the screen.

The ending was fairly surprising. It didn’t go quite where I was expecting, but it was a satisfying ending.

Oh and was it me or did they once again have a scene in the trailer that wasn’t in the film? Swear that happened with the second film too!
Rating: 3/5

  1. Actually, yeah. There were a number of clips in the trailer that didn’t make the movie.

It’s creating an interesting debate about movie marketing. Once they SHOW something in the trailer, are they obligated to have it in the movie?

I don’t have much problem with it. At least the movie they sold was the movie you got, in tone and spirit. I get far more upset when a movie positions itself one way in order to sell more tickets, but then the actual movie is way different.

Like, say, Event Horizon, which we talked about the other day!

Meanwhile, I think I liked this one more than you, but see eye to eye on most of your points, including the “been there, done that” factor!

    • They did the same thing with the 2nd film. There was a couple of clips in the trailer that weren’t in the film. I like to think they should be able to show whatever they want in the trailer. I don’t think there’s any obligation to show what’s in the trailer in the film, as it’s still essentially the same thing. Just the details changed. I kinda like it. You’re expecting one thing and given something else.

I’m not sure there should be a 4th. There will be considering how cheap these are to make and how much money they rake in. Just where else can it go?

  2. I only saw the first one, but I was so disappointed I didn’t even give the second one a try… Glad to read the third is good, I’ll put in on my list!

I think that the thing with the first movie is that everything is so predictable. You know when they’re just talking and you can relax, and you know when something scary is going to happen. And usually that “something” is not scary at all. I should probably say “disturbing”. I loved the three different endings, though.

    • Yep, it is very predictable like that. The third is the same. Pretty much. There are a couple of slightly unexpected moments. But it’s fun seeing it in the cinema for me – watching/hearing other people who are just absolutely terrified. It makes me crack up!

    • Yeah, wait for DVD. Watch it in the dark with some friends who get scared easily. It’ll make it a whole lot more amusing, trust me.
