100 movies of 2012

Every year I set myself a target, usually of about 100, of films to watch. These are new films. Not new, new films. But films that are new to me. Any time I’ve seen a new one, I post a bit of a brain dump of my thoughts on the film here. Enjoy!

The Royal TenenbaumsThe Royal Tenenbaums (03/03/12)

An estranged family of former child prodigies reunites when one of their member announces he has a terminal illness.

I can honestly say I’m not a Wes Anderson film fan. Not that I’ve seen many. The Darjeeling Limited, Fantastic Mr. Fox and this one. I loved Fantastic Mr. Fox, but The Royal Tenenbaums and Darjeeling Limited have just felt ok for me.

I enjoyed the film, but I wasn’t blown away. It was fairly amusing. It looked great. But I didn’t fall in love with the film or the characters. That’s ok, right? It’s not that I was left cold by the film. Far from it. It just didn’t light a fire under me. Don’t get me wrong. I did laugh. I was touched by the ending. It’s not a film I’m itching to go back and watch again.

I can just imagine Wes Anderson fans reading this and being just a little disgusted. I guess I’m one of those people who don’t ‘get’ his films.

Though, it’s funny, I’m strangely looking forward to Moonrise Kingdom – I love the look of it and the trailer genuinely amused me.
Rating: 3/5

  1. One of those rare movies I couldn’t even finish. This was so dull it was physically painful for me ahah ๐Ÿ˜‰ I doubt I will ever see it again but glad you somewhat liked it. Certainly one of those movies that isn’t for everyone.

    • I know people who adore this film and was finding it really hard to find what they adored so much!

  2. I haven’t seen this one, but I nearly included it on my latest movie project. I opted for Rushmore instead, which seems to get the most love out of his films. I might give this one a shot, but probably not anytime soon.

    • I would say, you probably chose the right film. But then, I’ve not seen Rushmore. How was Rushmore?

  3. I quite like The Royal Tenenbaums but I can’t say that I’m a fan of Wes Anderson. I am intrigued by Moonrise Kingdom though, the trailer is really intriguing and what a cast!

  4. Hey Jaina, while not my favorite Anderson film, I didn’t think this was half bad. That being said I have a thing for quirky characters and ridiculous situations so that might explain a lot. I am still jealous of the Tenenbaums huge collection in their game closet.
Looking forward to checking out Moonrise Kingdom as it was shot in RI fairly close to where I grew up.

    nice post as usual ๐Ÿ™‚

    • I do like a bit of quirk. I didn’t think there was too much here, just didn’t seem to work for me. Their game collection is pretty epic!

Moonrise Kingdom looks fantastic. Almost like a live action Fantastic Mr. Fox.

  5. “I can just imagine Wes Anderson fans reading this and being just a little disgusted.”

Nodding sadly. Although I’d substitute “disappointed” for “disgusted”.

You know how it is, when you really like a movie its so much better when your friends do too! That’s ok though… he’s definitely not for everyone, that’s for sure!
