100 movies: Red Riding Hood

100 movies of 2012

Every year I set myself a target, usually of about 100, of films to watch. These are new films. Not new, new films. But films that are new to me. Any time I’ve seen a new one, I post a bit of a brain dump of my thoughts on the film here. Enjoy!

Red Riding HoodRed Riding Hood (04/05/12)

Set in a medieval village that is haunted by a werewolf, a young girl falls for an orphaned woodcutter, much to her family’s displeasure.

Amanda Seyfried, what on Earth are you doing? You were fantastic in Big Love. Since you left, I don’t think I’ve seen a single good film of yours! Red Riding Hood was just more than a little bit bad. Not even the appearance of Gary Oldman could fix that.

It’s not Amanda’s fault. Not Gary Oldman’s either. It’s the fault of a very dodgy script and a very boring looking film. You’d think, a fantasy film would at least look special. Just looked a little cheap here. I swear there are TV shows with better production values than this film.

There’s more than a whiff of Twilight about this film. Thanks to Catherine Hardwicke’s involvement. The whole love triangle aspect was boring and predictable. The effort to make the red riding hood tale a little bit different was a decent try, but with so many fairytales getting their own re-imagining these days, it just wasn’t enough.

Though, I was excited to spot two ex-Battlestar Galactica actors and one Michael Shanks. It was definitely filmed in Canada then, huh? Yes, that’s what I’m taking away from watching this film.
Rating: 1/5

  1. haha 1/5 I consider myself amply warned and I’m going to stay the hell a way from this one! Didn’t even know Oldman made an appearance. Quite glad I didn’t as it might have lured me into seeing it.

  2. Amanda Seyfried is almost becoming synonym with terrible movies. I mean, outside of Mean Girls, it’s pretty scary.

    • Mean Girls looks like a blip in her film career. The only good blip. Someone sort this girl out.

  3. This one was so bad. I blasted it in my review too! haha.

Did you guess who the wolf was? I saw it and was disappointed when the reveal came and I was right from the beginning. booo. haha

    • It was a bit obvious. Especially if you’ve seen plenty of these types of films/tv shows. I was hoping for a real twist to at least lift the film a little bit. Oh my word.

  4. Cool to see some sci-fi faves in it I suppose, but not good enough to make it worth the time and ticket price. I am well warned.

  5. Oh, which ex-Battlestar Galactica actors are on here? I have to look that up now, I LOVE that show. I might watch it if it’s Jamie Bamber ๐Ÿ˜‰ Y’know I had no interest in this, looks so much like Twilight. I did hear that Ethan Peck [who looked just like his grandpa Gregory – http://style.mtv.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/ethan-peck.jpg%5D auditioned for one of the roles. Now I might make an exception and watch it if he got the role, ahah.

    • Jamie Bamber is just brilliant! Sadly it wasn’t him (Oh and I’ve met him at a convention and wow… to lower the tone, he’s hot). Col Tigh – Michael Hogan and Jen Halley – she’s just an extra always lurking in the background here!

Good thing Ethan didn’t get this role. I don’t think even he could have made this film any better.

      • What, what??? You MET Jamie Bamber?? Oh no doubt he is even hotter in real life, I mean that jawline, woof ๐Ÿ˜€ Did you happen to take a picture, share please…

        • It was back in my convention going days. I can confirm your theory on hotness, though he’s a little shorter than expected! Here’s my photo I had taken with him:

I’ve got plenty of shots of him during talks and what nots – really need to upload those somewhere!

  6. I too really disliked this one. The only redeeming thing about that film was the cinematography.

    • There were some beautiful shots, but I still expected more from that too. Game of Thrones has spoilt me.

  7. I didn’t know Gary Oldman was in this one. Too bad. Hope you’ve got a good movie lined up after this 1-2 combo with Bad Teacher. ๐Ÿ˜€
