Ben Affleck is Batman

This morning my daily routine was running a little late. Then I was early. Having previously been fully prepared to grab a pot of yoghurt to eat at my desk, I had a little bit of time for a bowl of Weetabix and glass of orange juice.

Switched on the TV to watch BBC Breakfast, it’s just habit, I know it’s mostly drivel. In between the news about John Lewis employees not being paid over time and something else the presenter announced that there would be two leading men in the next Superman film.

First I thought, what the fuck. You’re wrong, there’s not been talk of another standalone Supes film yet. Then I listened more and realised she was talking about the upcoming Superman and Batman film. Then the bomb went off.

BEN AFFLECK IS THE NEXT BATMAN.

First instinct – check the Internet. I do not trust BBC Breakfast news with what’s considered actual news, let alone film news. The Internet told me it was true!

Honestly, I thought this project was just going to be announced, talked about any then forgotten. But this news makes me think otherwise.

Not entirely sure how I feel about Affleck as the next Bruce Wayne. He’s definitely no Christian Bale. But that’s not a bad thing. Huh. Affleck is actually OLDER than Bale! He can do the dark and broody, which he was pretty good at in Argo. He’s matured very well over the years.

Who knows how this will all turn out. The casting of Affleck has actually got me a little bit more interested in this project. Should I be admitting that? All they need to get me totally interested is announcing Bryan Cranston as Lex Luthor.

  1. I think Affleck could do a pretty decent job. He’s a good actor, despite the reputation mewling internet twits like to ascribe to him. He can carry the playboy personality and the brooding one both, and he’ll probably be able to handle the physical aspects as well.

Of course, I personally think the actors are the least of the concerns when it comes to that film, but I’ve said enough on that already…

    • “I personally think the actors are the least of the concerns when it comes to that film”

THIS. Agree with this sentiment so very, very much. And agree with what you have said about Affleck. He’s a solid actor and doing really brilliant work right now.

  2. I’ve never been able to warm to Affleck as an actor. I can’t even put my finger on why but it goes all the way back to Good Will Hunting, so perhaps it’s that I just don’t see him as lead material. I haven’t seen Argo yet so perhaps that will sway me?

That said, I suspect any actor cast as Batman is going to have a tough time of it, especially so soon after the recent trilogy. I never thought anyone could match Michael Keaton but Christian Bale knocked it out of the park. Big shoes to fill…

    • Watch Argo and The Town. I think he does a better job as a director than an actor, but I don’t think he’s a terrible actor. Not by a long shot.

Christian Bale will probably always be THE Batman for me. Just like Daniel Craig is my definitive James Bond. Different generations will always have different notions!

  3. I think it’s gonna be a disaster. Snyder can’t direct anything and Affleck is not much of an actor, he lacks charisma and he is not nearly magnetic enough to pull it off.

    • Going to hold out judgement until there’s a script. Looks like Affleck is going to be involved in that, so great. And Cranston is onboard. WOO! Not the biggest fan of Snyder at all, but I’m going to wait and see on this one.

  4. I’m not sure how I feel about Affleck as Batman. I don’t doubt he could do a good job, but it just seems like there could’ve been a much more intriguing actor who could’ve been cast. Besides, he’s already Daredevil…

… which may well be why they cast him, since he’s already blind as a bat. ๐Ÿ˜›

  5. Affleck could be OK as Bruce Wayne. But I’m not sure if he could pull off Batman. I think his voice just isn’t right, too high-pitched or something. I’ll reserve judgment on his casting until I actually see the movie. But I’m going in somewhat hesitantly.
