100 movies: Frankenstein

100 movies of 2012

Every year I set myself a target, usually of about 100, of films to watch. These are new films. Not new, new films. But films that are new to me. Any time I’ve seen a new one, I post a bit of a brain dump of my thoughts on the film here. Enjoy!

FrankensteinFrankenstein (15/03/12)

Horror classic in which an obsessed scientist assembles a living being from parts of exhumed corpses.

Watching an old black and white film from 1931 I found that I had to stop myself from inadvertently sniggering at certain things. Lines of, what now sounds like, slightly cheesy dialog. Some moments that are of the era. But get passed all of that, Frankenstein is a brilliant film.

There’s never a moment wasted. Every single second of the film is reserved for progressing the story forward. Right from the beginning with the first funeral to the end. That’s one thing a lot of films these days could learn from!

With this being such a classic and well known story, it was just a matter of watching and enjoying the film. And that I did. The sets were stunning. They blew me away. Really amazingly put together. I couldn’t help but wish I was watching it in the theatre.

A great little film. If you haven’t seen it, I urge you to give it a watch.
Rating: 4/5

  1. I still haven’t got around to seeing this one yet although I really want to. Nice to see you enjoyed it so much. That version of the monster is a classic!

    • Definitely worth a watch. I loved the intro for the film too – the whole “warning” about how horrific the film would be.

  2. Its been way too long. I need to revisit this.

Thanks for the advance scouting. I need to rewatch with a blogger’s eye! 🙂

  3. I just caught this on TCM the other day. I actually viewed and reviewed Bride of Frankenstein because it was available via streaming before I saw this film. It is certainly dated but still a nice introduction to the universal Monster films. I think I enjoyed Bride of Frankenstein a bit more than the original.

  4. Haven’t seen this, but it’s been on my watch list. Glad you enjoyed it, Jaina. Looking forward to catching it at some point! Sounds very enjoyable and fun to watch.

    • Definitely worth a watch. It’s kinda like a mini time capsule. Seeing what film was like back then.
