100 movies: Super

100 movies of 2012

Every year I set myself a target, usually of about 100, of films to watch. These are new films. Not new, new films. But films that are new to me. Any time I’ve seen a new one, I post a bit of a brain dump of my thoughts on the film here. Enjoy!

SuperSuper (07/04/12)

After his wife falls under the influence of a drug dealer, an everyday guy transforms himself into Crimson Bolt, a superhero with the best intentions, though he lacks for heroic skills.

Is it a little bit harsh giving this film the rating I’ve given it? By the time the film had finished I just didn’t care for it at all. Sure it had some fairly good bits of creativity in it. Rainn Wilson played the loser fairly well. But dear lord was Ellen Page’s Libby a whole heap of annoying! Honestly – I can’t remember the last time a character annoyed me as much as she did. And I usually like Ellen Page! Least I have done in the last few films of hers I’ve seen.

I felt it really hard to get behind Rainn Wilson’s character. Moreso when he turned into the Crimson Bolt. Then things got a whole lot worse for me when Boltie was introduced.

Kevin Bacon was a smarmy enough bad guy. He really didn’t do very much. The same goes for Liv Tyler. Both of them felt a little bit wasted in their roles.

Maybe I just missed the point of this film. I was expecting a more realistic version of Kick Ass but all I got was a very weak film full of some incredibly annoying characters. Least I know now, huh?
Rating: 1/5

  1. Ooh shame, I really liked this! Ellen Page is annoying but I thought in an endearing sort of way. And I just couldn’t quite believe how dark it all got. I was laughing but in a sort of shocked, sad way by the end. But I agree that Liv Tyler was completely wasted. Rain Wilson was brilliant, a nice proper psycho! And very different to his performance in Hesher which I’d just seen before I watched this.

    • I really wanted to like the film and I’m not adverse to some violence or James Gunn’s love of gore. But just didn’t get into it. It did get very dark, but don’t think I laughed once.

  2. Ooooooh… the bullet.

I wish I could actually comment, but I haven’t seen this flick.

So I’ll just leave you with “Ooooooh… the bullet.”

  3. Shame to read you didn’t like it. I really did…it is a very dark comedy and I laughed a lot because of Ellen Page’s character.

  4. I thought this one was pretty decent. I liked it more than Kick-Ass, but I tend to gravitate toward darker films anyway. Definitely gotta be in the right mindset for it, though.

    • I think that might be it, as clearly everyone else seemed to really enjoy it. Perhaps a rewatch when I’m in the “mood” for it.

  5. It’s definitely not for everyone. The word I most associate with this movie is uncomfortable. There are a lot of uncomfortable scenes in this movie and it really messes with your expectations of what the movie is supposed to be. Once you know what you’re going into, it might help a little bit but I haven’t watched it a second time yet. I personally liked Boltie for the most part.

    • I thought there were some parts of Boltie that were endearing. She was just so damn enthusiastic!

Uncomfortable is definitely the word I’d use. Usually I’m ok with uncomfortable, but things were a little jarring for me.

      Oh and thank you 😀

  6. I thought that behind all of the blood, guts, and vigilante violence, there was actually a very sweet story but it does kind of get lost in translation. However, it did feature some nice performances from everybody, especially Wilson who seems like he’s getting better and better with these indie roles. Good review Jaina.

    • It definitely got a bit lost for me. I like Wilson. He’s amusing. Though he plays very similar roles.

  7. Pretty freaking hilarious movie at times because of how outrageous it can be in some scenes. Love when he goes and smacks that guy and his girlfriend with a wrench because they jumping the line at the movie theater! But it’s a really weird movie so I can see why you disliked it. The whole Ellen Page getting horny was really really weird ahah

  8. Well, that’s disappointing. I love Ellen Page, too, and I can’t imagine her being annoying. That’s very unfortunately.

There is something about Rainn Wilson’s geekiness/loser-ness, it’s as if he was BORN to be that way. LOL I love him as Dwight Scurute (The Office). I recently saw him in an old episode of CSI: Las Vegas. He played a creepy theft. All I could think about was, “Oh, Dwight.” LOL

    • Even though I’ve not seen much of The Office (only the first season) but even I see him as Dwight all the time!

  9. Shame you didn’t like this, probably would have retrospectively entered my best of the year list. Totally agree that it would depend on your frame of mind and expectations.

I think it was all the quirks that won it for me.

    • I love me some quirks. And I’m a Nathan Fillion fan. I’m questioning just why I didn’t like it now.

  10. I really don’t get Rainn Wilson’s appeal. He’s even annoying in The Office. Suffice to say I’ll be skipping this.

    • I think he’s funny, but can get tired of him fairly quickly. Which is what happened here. Even though the film was relatively short.
