100 movies: [REC] 3 Genesis

100 movies of 2012
Every year I set myself a target, usually of about 100, of films to watch. These are new films. Not new, new films. But films that are new to me. Any time I’ve seen a new one, I post a bit of a brain dump of my thoughts on the film here. Enjoy!

[REC] 3 Genesis[REC] 3 Genesis (04/09/12)

A couple’s wedding day turns into a horrific events as some of the guests start showing signs of a strange illness.

Let me get right to the point. WHAT A DISAPPOINTMENT! Completely and utterly. My trusty Spanish zombie genre just didn’t deliver the goods at all.

Here’s a bit of a history lesson. The first [REC] film was a surprise for me. It was interesting, some times a little jumpy and genuinely a tense little zombie film. The zombies were great. The story had an original twist at the end. Brilliant film. The sequel kept things going nicely. [REC] 2 kept up the mythology and built on it. Still with the same setting but different characters. So things were already getting a bit samey. But the building of the mythology kept things interesting.

See, I can understand what they were trying to do with [REC] 3. They wanted to get out of that block of flats in Barcelona and look at the impact in a different location. But it just fell flat for me. Very flat.

There was an injection of humor. Too much. Too silly. Though I did appreciate John Sponge. The romance was completely over the top. Oh and they ditched the whole handheld camera aspect!

There weren’t any stand out zombies. I still miss zombie-grandma from the first film. She was excellent! No stand out zombie killings either. I did spend plenty of time yelling at the TV – the stupid people who are just doing plain stupid things! RUN! Don’t bloody DAWDLE!

Such a shame. If they do a [REC] 4, they need to get back to what made this one of my favourite zombie series.
Rating: 2/5

  1. I saw you tweet about this and I am very disappointed by the it. I still haven’t seen it but I was looking forward to it as I loved the first two films so much

    • Yep, it’s Spanish. They’re all Spanish and I believe done by the same director.

There is an American remake – Quarantine. It’s fairly awful. In the sense that it’s pretty much a frame for frame remake but without the style of the original.

  2. aaaaah man gutted to hear you didn’t rate this! I’ve just won a copy through some competition and it’s hopefully being sent to me as we speak. I heard they ditched the handheld camera and that there was humour and was hoping for good things after the last 2. Never mind, low expectations might give it a boost for me.

    • Ooo, will look forward to find out what you make of it then. I’m just wondering if my hopes were too high. I just wanted something similar to the first two!

  3. Ah, really? I was hoping this would at least be decent. Then again, it seems most series start to taper off around the third entry… Too bad, because the first two were good fun.

  4. Damn good horror movie is really a rare thing these days, isn’t it? Loved the first REC, never seen the second one. I have yet to read a positive review on the third part ^^

    • The second REC is good. They upped the budget so it’s a bit more swish. Avoid the third one. Watch the second!

    • Yeah, definitely not one for those who don’t like horrors, if for someone who does like horrors, it’s a disappointment!

  5. really? booooo…

I was hoping you’d have something better to say. What a disappointment for sure. I enjoyed the remake of [Rec], Quarantine, and was looking forward to catching the films. I still will try to catch part 1 and 2, but will be skipping part 3 now. Thanks.

wow, 70 already huh? keep it going

    • I wasn’t a big fan of Quarantine. It was too much of a frame for frame remake. And didn’t like the direction they took the zombie source in either. I can’t believe it has a sequel! Zombies on a plane!
