Tucker and Dale vs. Evil

Tucker & Dale are on vacation at their dilapidated mountain cabin when they are attacked by a group of preppy college kids.

It feels like it’s taken me forever to sit down to watch this film. Well, nearly three years according to the original release date which was back in 2010. Was it really that long ago?

A quiet Sunday afternoon seemed like a good time to sit and watch Tucker and Dale vs. Evil, with the family. After all, my dad had been saying he’d been wanting to watch a comedy for a while. Meanwhile my mum is a little sensitive to onscreen violence.

Well, we all laughed our guts out. Even my mum. Though, her laughter was definitely more of the “This is hilarious! But I shouldn’t be laughing at other people’s pain!”. I reassured her – those kids deserved it. I have never seen my mum hide her laughter as much as she did while watching this film.

A little bit like how The Cabin in the Woods disassembles the typical horror film, Tucker and Dale vs. Evil reverses it. With a bit of a sweet message behind it. Or was that just me seeing that?

The humor is perfect. Every single comedic moment had me either nearly busting a gut laughing, or actually busting a gut laughing. Hysterical laughter. Not seen a film that’s had that effect on me in a long time. A lot of that has to do with the hapless hillbilles – Tucker and Dale. Tyler Labine and Alan Tudyk are the perfect pairing. I’ve always been a fan of Tudyk’s comedy roles. (Yes, even in A Knight’s Tale.) And yes, Wash from Firefly was a favourite of mine. He’s got great comedy timing and never misses a moment here. The chainsaw scene was probably my favourite – HILARIOUS! Oh and the college kids attempt at storming the cabin. Actual laugh out loud moments right there.

As horror comedies/parodies go, this is up there with Shaun of the Dead and The Cabin in the Woods. Hoping it’ll be the indie classic it deserves to be.

  1. This thing was a hoot. I really liked it. Tons of good humor! My only w problem was with the ending. It seemed to go more conventional. Still, this was lots of fun. Glad you enjoyed it.

    • Yeah, it did go a bit conventional. Which was a shame, why I knocked it down from 5 to 4. But still, copious amounts of fun and originality elevated this one for me big time.

  2. Yeah, I had a good time with this one too. Nothing earth shattering I didnt think, but it was a clever inversion of your standard tropes. LOL. More comedy than horror of course, but still a great flick!

  3. Glad you liked it! This is such a funny movie, along with Slither and Cabin in the Woods one of the most hilarious comedy horrors.

    • Definitely in the top 5 all time favourite horror comedies.

Slither is excellent. Come to think of it, think it deserves a rewatch one of these days.

  4. I thoroughly enjoyed this movie too, and I agree that there was a sweet message behind all the carnage. 🙂 My favorite line: “I should have known if a guy like me talked to a girl like you, somebody would end up dead.” Glad you’re also a fan of Alan Tudyk. I LOVED Wash.

    • Tudyk is freaking fantastic. I’d love to see him do something dramatic actually. Some comedic actors often make for great dramatic ones.

Though, I’ll watch Tudyk in anything.

  5. Happy to see you enjoyed it. I also loved it and I’m not a fan of the horror genre. A great comedy! Have you seen Zombieland Jaina? Although not as hilarious it’s also worth a watch.

    • ADORE Zombieland. Probably more than this one. Woody Harrelson is excellent in that film. Also, those opening titles are one of the best I’ve ever seen for a film. Best use of Metallica’s For Whom the Bell Tolls, that’s for sure.

  6. it’s fun when you can laugh during a horror movie. I haven’t bothered to see this one, but it looks like a fun time.

oh, and inspired by you, I am also logging the movies I watch this year (though, not on my site like you are). Pretty fun seeing the #s go up and up. Have a great day!

    • Excellent. The best thing about logging the films you watch? Going back over the list a few years later and seeing films listed you have no recollection of watching!

  7. I really dug this low-budget horror film. This one had me laughing quite a bit, would make a great double feature with Cabin in the Woods.
