30 day black & white challenge: The End

30 Day Challenge, Photo Challenges

My 30 day photo challenge is over. Feels like I’ve been doing this for longer than 30 days. And I managed to miss a few days due to sheer lethargy and laziness. Well, here’s what I managed on my final week:

30 day: Veg 30 day: Shower Curtain 30 day: Vikings! 30 day: Ornament 30 day: Happy Halloween!

I have to admit that it’s been a lot harder than I thought it would be. Considering I managed to do a 365 project last year with relative ease. 30 days seemed to be a lot harder, even with a theme of black and white.

I did learn that black and white isn’t all that easy to do. Black and white photos are all about the contrast and light. Without either, you’ve got a fairly flat and dull photo. Well, from my perspective. I could be totally wrong there.

I’m going to give a daily photo a break for now. I’ll keep carrying my camera with me, but not have the pressure or needing to take a photo. Be nice to take some colour photos now.

You can find all of my photos for this challenge on my flickr.

If anyone fancies throwing another subject for me to do another 30 day challenge some time later, please do! It’d be great to have try something thought up by someone else.

  1. These are cool

And I agree with you about black and white – it’s tricky and it is all in the contrast and light. That said, it is easier to ‘cheat’ with black and white and fix problems with good digital darkroom skills. As I was taught, always shoot for slightly overexposed – gives you more to work with.

    • The overexpose trick is a good one. even more useful when shooting RAW. I know there’s arguments to choose to underexpose too, but guess it always comes down to personal preference.

Black and white is easy to cheat. Almost anything can look great in black and white. Almost..!

  2. I’ve loved the results of your challenge, with the final one (Happy Halloween) being one of my absolute favourites. It’s the type of shot made for B&W. And one I wish I’d taken!

I agree with you about Black & white shots not being as easy as they might appear to be. I don’t have many in my collection because I’ve not yet challenged myself there, but it’s a genre of photography that fascinates me because, when done right, and compared to the original colour version, the mood and feel can change so dramatically.

    • I would say definitely give it a go. You’ve got such a wonderful eye for photography I don’t doubt you could produce something really amazing.

  3. You found the 365 easy? Bravo! Anywho, my favs are drops of water on curtain, that troll haha and the path in the forest! I read a few challenges on Digital Photography School that I may try. Photographing the alphabet. Using a different camera. Using one lens. Let me know if you do another challenge!

    • I will do Lisa! I’ve totally failed in my attempts at a 365 this year and feel like I need a photography boost!
