Would it be so bad to get things adjusted?

Thoughts

Watching The Adjustment Bureau again the other day. It’s not as if I loved the film, but I was having a lazy Sunday afternoon. It came up on TV and the remote was just too far away for me to try to change the channel.

Strangely, I think I enjoyed the film a bit more watching it on the small screen rather than when I saw it in the cinema. But that’s not really what I’m going to be getting at here.

I just began thinking. Thinking that maybe it might not be such a bad thing if we actually had an Adjustment Bureau in our lives. Knowing that some of the decisions we take in our lives are not just whims but have a real purpose further down the line. That there is a plan.

I understand that a lot of people out there believe in destiny, that our lives are planned out. At one point I did believe that, and sort of still do. But I also prescribe to the notion that you take control of your life. You don’t just coast along letting things happen. But you make the decisions that get you to where you want to be.

The Adjustment Bureau

My very own Adjustment Bureau?

Which was another point that The Adjustment Bureau was driving home. No matter how much things are plotted out, you can still do something to change things.

Having an Adjustment Bureau would alleviate some of the pressure those important decisions feel like they impose on us. Though I guess we wouldn’t really know they existed! Maybe if I could be that one person who did know. That’d be perfect.

This is a bit of a weird ramble. And I know The Adjustment Bureau isn’t really a very think-y sort of film to be taken all that seriously. But I just started thinking that it would be reassuring if you knew that every decision you make in life, whether for good or bad, has some sort of reasoning behind it.

    • Because sometimes it really is just too much of a stretch away and that stretch just doesn’t seem worth it.

  1. haha both your post and the comment above had me laugh knowingly. Despite some lacklustre reviews, I’m still going to see this film. Sounds like a fun idea and it certainly got you thinking!

    • It’s not a bad film. Not great. Certainly not “this year’s Inception” as a lot of deep voiced movie voice overs kept insisting it was.

  2. Ahah, too funny. No I think I’d rather keep my free will thank you very much. Even if I made a bad decision at least I know it’s mine instead of some guys in suits forcing me to do it 😀

P.S. I thought the movie was entertaining but preposterous and have more plot holes that rival Prometheus.

  3. I thought the movie was all right. The thing that kind of ruined it for me was the hammy, scenery-chewing acting of all the “adjusters” (whatever they were called). If those guys had turned in better performances, the movie would have been a lot better.

    • John Slattery was pretty much playing Roger Sterling from Mad Men. Only I wished he was actually playing Roger – that would have made for an infinitely more entertaining film.

  4. I’m definitely in favor of having someone else be in charge. Anyone else, actually. And if they’ve got fancy hats, then all the better!

  5. HAHA….I’ve had the problem with the remote being too far as well. Anyway, I haven’t seen this movie, but I remember what it was about. I guess it would be nice to have a little adjustment in life. It would be cool to even have the feature in life. I’m sure with any adjustment, the outcome will change….kinda scary when you think about it. I guess my “little” adjustment would be going to college right after high school. Man, my life would be TOTALLY different if I did that.

    • It is weird thinking about any minor or major points in your life and thinking how things would be different if you’d have a slightly different decision. Or maybe they’d still be the same! The funny thing is, we’ll never know.

  6. an interesting thought, but I am very glad that mistakes I make can indeed be that, but that I can learn from them too (if I choose to, that is). LOL.

I thought it was funny that you didn’t stop watching the movie only because the remote was too far away. ha. I enjoy the film myself, but I guess it’s mainly for Emily Blunt! Wowza!

    • Mistakes are definitely there to be learnt from. TRUE FACT!

I only wanted to watch this for Matt Damon. If only he was Jason Bourne in this film. He’d have taken no prisoners.

  7. Very deep thought on this movie! Being a Christian, I believe there is a bigger plan for my life. However, I still make day to day decisions for myself. So in one sense, I can control my life because I make decisions — good/bad/right/wrong. But it’s good to know that whatever decisions I’ve made, God’s there for me.
