Three Years in Bahrain

Life

This past weekend saw me mark my third year in Bahrain. While there weren’t any celebrations, it’s enough of a milestone for me to remember the date when I excitedly hopped on a plane to my new home.

Living abroad was never something I aspired to do. I was quite happy spending my whole life living where I lived, in England. But then someone had to walk into my life to turn things upside down. And I’ve never been more grateful of that happening.

Life in Bahrain has taught me as much about myself as it has about living abroad. Living abroad is not glamorous, it’s just every day life. You join the same queues to get the same shit done as you do in any other country. Well, there have been a few times when I have thought “only in Bahrain”. (One day I’ll write about what getting married in Bahrain entails.)

These past three years of living in Bahrain have taught me that I’m a stronger, more capable, and adaptable woman than I thought I was. Perhaps it shouldn’t have taken moving to a whole new country to figure that out, but sometimes that’s just how the world works.

These past three years have also taught me that home is not just one physical location, but it’s where you feel at home. It’s the familiar smells and sensations. Home is where your person is, and my person is here, so I couldn’t feel more at home.

Who knows how much longer I’ll be in Bahrain, or where I’ll be headed next. I know that these past three years have prepared me for whatever happens.

  1. Hi
I plan to look for a job in Bahrain. I’m middle aged and a primary school teacher in the Uk. I would be living alone as my family – husband and adult children live in the UK. I just want a change and want to try living on my own. Do schoolspay their teachers well. Would like to know any other information you might have about the place. Thanks

    • I’m not 100% sure about how much teachers are paid in Bahrain, but it’ll be very dependant on which type of school you’d be teaching at. Drop me an email (http://time-wellspent.com/contact) and I’d be happy to answer any questions you might have about living in Bahrain.
