Happy New Year (Belated)

Life

We’re now a few days into 2013 and I’m only just getting around to writing a New Years themed post. Let’s just say I was waiting to see what 2013 would feel like before I jump into judgements and resolutions.

2012 wasn’t a bad year for me. It wasn’t phenomenally-oh-my-god-amazing-best-year-ever. But there were some definite memorable moments.

  1. Took the leap into self-employment. Sort of.
  2. Experienced my first ever surgery.
  3. Holidayed in a castle.
  4. Learnt about tidal flows.
  5. Climbed onto a window sill without an exit plan. (The whole of my holiday to Scotland with my friends was pretty much an entire week of memorable.)
  6. Fell in love.
  7. Read more. All of eight books. Trust me. For me, that’s a lot. (A Feast for Crows, A Dance with Dragons, MWF Seeking BFF, The Lies of Locke Lamora, Batman: Year One, Double Dexter, Red Seas Under Red Skies, World War Z and Cat’s Cradle)
  8. Saw some great things at the theatre – Bring Me the Head of Adam Riches, The 39 Steps and The Boy with Tape on His Face.
  9. Wrote my first ever guest blog post.

There are a few things I wished I did more of in 2013. Taken more photos. Gone to the theatre more. Saw more live music. Seen my friends more. Gone on holiday somewhere new. Little things. But things I can’t help but wish I’d done.

So 2013, I’m hoping to pack some of these things into you. Though, failing on taking more photos as I haven’t even picked up my camera yet this year.

One theatre trip is already booked (Book of Mormon) and hopefully one more fairly soon.

But I have absolutely no plans. Which is a first for me. No resolutions. Which isn’t a first for me. I never make resolutions. Just going to take each day as it comes. With a few of those things up there in mind.

  1. That blog post was quite a triumph, too, I have to admit. You ruled my blog for almost two weeks. LOL πŸ˜€

Glad to hear you came out on the plus side of some of the more unfavorable things on your list, there πŸ˜‰

    • Every year there’s always the shit. But you got to forget all that crap and remember the good times. Am I right? I like to think I always am πŸ˜‰

  2. Sounds like 2012 was good to you! Congrats on #6… hope it’d last πŸ˜€ Bummer on the surgery though, whatever it was hope you’re healing soon. Happy [belated] New Year Jaina!

  3. I got to #6 and had to take a moment before reading on. That’s just completely wonderful πŸ˜€

8 books is a good tally. I managed about 3, I think. I had a moment of insanity at the end of 2012 where I thought about entering into a 52 books for 2013 challenge. Then I remembered those 3 whole books. Never gonna happen.

    • πŸ™‚ #6 caught me by surprise a little bit. But the best kind of surprise.

I’m usually a 2 books per year sort of person. When I go on holiday and have hours to do nothing but sit by the pool. I do not know how people manage those 52 book challenges! Insane!

  4. Awesome accomplishments. You should be very proud of yourself.

You did forget to add visiting Hawai’i to your list for 2013. πŸ˜‰

I can’t wait to see what 2013 has in-store for you!!!! Will you be doing more challenges? I know you wrote about a photography challenge, but what about doing 100 movies again? That was fun to read.

    • I did? OH I TOTALLY DID! πŸ˜‰

I’m doing the 100 movie challenge for sure. Not sure about photography challenge. The pressure is putting me off! I do want to take more photos. Just not sure how. Just yet! I’ll figure it out soon enough. I hope.

  5. I’ve enjoyed reading your blog through the last year, not commented often but I tend to lurk these days. Busy with the self employed thing myself.
Photography project wise ? I’m doing something called Project 520. You basically take a set of 10 photos each week for a year (52 weeks x 10 = 520, simples) based on a theme or whatever takes your fancy. A friend who is a resident Photographer at Oxford’s O2 Academy came up with the idea (he’s since adapted it to cycling 520 miles this year). It appears to be less stressful than a 365 challenge. I’m off to the Ashmolean tomorrow to do this weeks project 520 set. In the Ancient Egypt and Nubia galleries. May return to the Ashmolean and cover all the other stuff in there on rainy days.

Anyway if you want to hit the dreaming spires with your camera, I’ll be more than happy to show you around Oxford and all the local photographer type spots.

    • That sounds a bit too challenging for me! I tried the themes thing last year and could barely think of enough themes for each month let alone each week. Sounds like something I might try for a month though.

      Thanks, Kevin!

  6. I heard that World War Z book is excellent. Have you seen the film trailer, I am preparing for the disappointment.

Happy New Year to you Jaina

    • The book is excellent. There film trailer didn’t fill me with a lot of confidence. Will have to wait and see, but it doesn’t look like it’s following much of the book at all!

  7. I am seeing The Book of Mormon this Saturday and cannot wait. Regarding the new year, do what you love and everything will fall into place. Happy new year.

  8. So I can see that everyone’s praising your #6, and I can’t blame them ;). I honestly try not to be much of a sap, but #6 happened for me too, so it makes me feel super happy to know that you’ve gotten to experience that amazing feeling too in 2012!

And I could totally go for vacationing in a castle . . . sign me up! Ha!

Hope 2013 is an awesome year for you. I like the idea of taking it day by day.

    • Aww, thanks Kristin! I thought I’d just sneak it in there and people wouldn’t notice too much, but apparently they did!

Great to see another blog post up on AEOS too, hope to see more of them πŸ˜‰

  9. That little, unassuming, no.6 is actually a huge thing and must make 2012 a bigger year than you modestly claim here!

  10. I got Book of Mormon tickets for Christmas! Can’t wait! Hope the self-employment goes well this year!

  11. Like most people in this comment thread, I saw #6, took a pause, and smiled thinking to myself “Good for you!”

looks like 2012 was a fun eventful year. Thank you for sharing it with us through the months. Look forward to what 2013 brings for Jaina!
